Alex G Shines Headlights On Boston

Alex G Shines Headlights On Boston

Eclectic singer-songwriter and producer Alexander Giannascoli, professionally known as Alex G, kicked off his tour in support of his tenth studio album, Headlights, in Boston. He graced Roadrunner with a two-night residency on September 10th and 11th. After announcing the original opening show on the 11th, he added a second date the night before due to demand. Following Boston stopped by the mesmerizing show on night two. Fans spilled into the venue and grabbed vinyl from the merchandise tables before finding their spots on the floor.

First up was indie singer-songwriter Nilüfer Yanya. She strutted onto the stage at 8:00 pm sharp, wearing a striped t-shirt, jeans, and her curly, dirty blonde hair tucked into a high ponytail. She was a woman of few words during her set, leaning on her music to communicate with the crowd. Her set consisted of mellow and hazy tracks that displayed her flawless ability to vocal flip between chest and head voice. Her four-piece band bounced energy off each other, with her keyboardist working double duty on a smooth saxophone during a cover of PJ Harvey's "Rid Of Me." Twangy guitar and crunchy drums highlighted Yanya's resonant voice, putting Boston under her spell. She thanked the audience for coming early to her set before escaping backstage.

Between sets, an unpredictable preshow playlist set the whimsical tone for the night. Songs like "Macarena" by Los Del Rio loosened up the crowd and got them dancing. Soon after, the lights dimmed and the audience released thunderous cheers. Alex G and his band snuck on stage in the darkness and dove into the first song, "Louisiana." He had an immediate command of the crowd, capturing them with an unexpected falsetto and raw quality in his voice. Colorful flashing lights synced to the drums added drama and underscored the depth of the instrumentals. The tones of the lights shifted from warm oranges reminiscent of a sunset into the purples and blues featured on the Headlights album cover. During the folksy track "June Guitar," Alex G grabbed his accordion to perform the outro, reminding fans about the tangible quality and connection formed through live music when compared to backing tracks.

The star kept Boston guessing, sprinkling humor and surprises throughout his set. Other artists may transition to a slower song when they sit down at the keyboard for the first time during the night, and at first, Alex G made Roadrunner think that he was doing the same. He said, "This is the really slow one, so grab a partner and look them in the eye and show them that you're grateful that each other is here and healthy and give them a hug maybe" before playing his punchiest, loudest, noise rock track "Brick," energizing the crowd who thrashed their heads to the beat.

In today's digital age, there is an increasing obsession with recording concerts and transforming venues into Apple™ orchards. At Alex G's show, there were barely any phones in sight as fans soaked up each moment, losing themselves in the music. His knack for storytelling transported the venue to a mystical space free from judgment. He played his new album, Headlights, front to back, a rare and deeply appreciated act by fans.

He ended his set with the album's euphonious title track, "Headlights," a song about life's many paths and choices, foreshadowing the encore. Alex G returned for arguably the lengthiest encore performed at the venue, selecting a myriad of new songs when compared to the encore selections from the night before, suggesting this section of the show will rotate throughout the tour. He performed a whopping eight tracks, with songs like "Boy" making its tour debut.

Headlights may have marked Alex G's first project with a major label, but this newest album and live show prove that the intimate and vulnerable sound of his DIY-scene roots is intertwined in his artist DNA. Yanya will be accompanying Alex G on tour before joining Lorde on her Ultrasound World Tour across the pond this fall. Make sure to catch Alex G and Yanya live before the North American leg of his tour before it ends in October. Limited tickets remain; find out if there are any available at a show near you here.
