I know summer traditionally begins on the 21st day of June every year. However, this year, I realized that Wilco graciously gave every single person who attended their Saturday, June 13th show the invaluable gift of an early and unforgettable start to, arguably, the much anticipated and favorite season of Michiganders from every corner of the state. The energy was electric as soon as you set foot on the Meadow Brook Amphitheatre grounds; and the mild temperature, comfortable breeze, coupled with the endless number of fans moving with happiness and elation as they anticipated the start to the show spread the excitement to a contagious level. Every interaction was rooted in organic connection, and a shared gratitude for a beautiful night amongst friends and smiling strangers. The camaraderie was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before; the collective energy was palpable and electrifying. I can honestly say, that I will be seeking out the perfectly imperfect vibes that were curated that night, at every single show I attend for the remainder of 2026.

“Handshake Drugs” sliced through the summer air like a scalpel; and simultaneously mesmerized every set of eyes towards Jeff Tweedy and the other members of Wilco. The intoxicating energy shifted from pre-show anticipation to a welcomed hypnosis; induced by the very first note, as it created a reverberation throughout our bodies. The band played and entertained effortlessly; their ease and enviable coolness only attainable by their own magical formula carefully crafted over the years by each individual member. Wilco has that secret sauce that you’ll never guess all the ingredients to, but you know that there are fundamental components to the recipe necessary for their longevity and loyal fan base. Jeff, John, Glenn, Mikael, Nels and Pat possess the swagger of seasoned veterans, while maintaining the innate ability to bring a relatability to their live performances. They bring a levity and a playfulness to the stage; transforming everyday concertgoers into lifelong fans.
In a suburb outside of Detroit, Wilco brought all walks of life together that balmy Saturday night and played songs that created a visceral reaction in every person populating the crowd; regardless of it being their first or ten thousandth time listening to each track. “Via Chicago,” “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” and “Jesus, Etc.” were some personal highlights for me; the energy was cataclysmic in the best way, as these beloved songs ripped through the venue, and ignited something that made all the ordinary, mundane, and redundant weights of life temporarily lift; I felt awash with feelings of unity, creativity, compassion, kindness and contentment. Collectively the vibe evolved into our own insulated ecosystem; I seldom feel like “everything is going to be okay;” yet I could only feel as if life was pretty damn good in that moment. I recognized the exquisite peculiarity of the progression of the evening and knew that I had been party to something unable to be duplicated again. I did a 360 degree spin, and took in all the joy and togetherness music provides. I felt truly privileged to photograph the critically acclaimed, passionately experimental, and proudly unapologetic cult heroes, Wilco.
I’m always inspired by the artists I’m given the very fortunate and intimate opportunity to capture through my love of photography. To be given a platform to share my vision; to portray their vulnerability in its defiant entirety is something I will never tire of documenting and sharing with others. However, Wilco’s show at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre hit differently, and I felt my own artistic vulnerability emerge as I chronicled their performance through my camera lens. There was an almost magical feeling that made its presence known; and it culminated in a personal drive to push myself creatively moving forward. I felt motivated, inspired, and most importantly, hungry to shoot, change, grow and learn. I felt the same excitement from Wilco’s Meadow Brook performance as I felt back in 2015, when I captured them at the Gathering Of The Vibes Festival. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have photographed some of the most talented musicians in the world; however, I felt especially grateful as I experienced a full circle moment thinking about photographing Wilco in 2015, and photographing them 11 years later, in 2026. Eleven years is a significant amount of time; especially in a field as oversaturated as photography. However, we’re both still stretching ourselves, despite the criticisms, the setbacks, and the ones that are so quick to judge, but terrified to try. They’ve created a blueprint that shows the importance of being innovative, fervent, inventive, whimsical, and most importantly, true to yourself above all else. I’m excited for their return to Detroit. Thank you for not just an amazing show, Wilco, but for an experience that reminded me of why I love what I do. Nowadays, when everyone seems to have a camera and an interest in taking photos, I will take a page from your book and revel in the fact that I’m still here. Just as you have cultivated your longevity and following one song, one performance, one gig at a time; I will remember that the courage it takes to be vulnerable through sharing your art with the world is a slice of what sets you guys apart from the others. I don’t see you guys slowing down anytime soon; and neither will I. Maybe the best part of the journey is still ahead of us.

Enjoy your tour; we wish you safe travels and positive vibes as you give a piece of yourselves to the fans of every city you play. You’ll always have a home and a place in our hearts here in Detroit. Until next time, cheers!
