Pop music icon Katy Perry brought The Lifetimes Tour to TD Garden on Friday, August 8. The jaw-dropping show incorporated an industrial aesthetic, complete with acrobatics and over 15 years of hits. Ever since releasing her seventh studio album, 143, Perry has brought fans into her butterfly world. Boston went above and beyond to craft looks that referenced her career, like the beachy Super Bowl performance and signature cone bras. Best friends wore coordinating red and blue sequin outfits referencing the color scheme of 143.
First up was hyper-pop princess Rebecca Black. She strutted on stage with a larger-than-life presence and immediate command of the crowd. Boston was blessed with a third performance from Black this year. After a stellar headline show in March and a festival set in June, Black was back for her first arena show in the city. The singer-songwriter performed an array of her heart-pumping and heavy-hitting tracks like "American Doll" and "Do You Even Think About Me?"

Fans had the opportunity to take in the sheer grandness of the production between sets. A gaggle of screens played videos from Perry's discography, including the "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" music video that featured Black back in 2011. The main stage was attached to an infinity-sign-shaped catwalk that extended to the back of the floor. A significant theme of Perry's latest album is fostering community, making the infinity sign a perfect symbol to represent that love for her fans.
The lights dimmed, and the venue released thunderous applause. Perry kicked off her set with rich storytelling, transporting Boston into a dystopian video game where players had to fight to restore butterflies to the land, its primary source of energy. Perry served as the avatar for the game, using the video to show her transform into a half-human-half-robot hybrid. A metal contraption covered in tubes straight out of The Matrix was lowered down from the venue's ceiling, and Perry emerged inside strapped to the glowing rings. She opened with the song "Artificial," effortlessly hitting each note as she hung from the ceiling, a testament to her stamina. Songs like "Chained to the Rhythm" and "Dark Horse" immediately brought the nostalgia and reminded fans why they fell in love with her music.

Dancers, dressed in matching cyberpunk outfits adorned with headsets, created dynamic shapes with their sharp arm movements, underscoring the beat. Perry committed to executing death-defying stunts straight out of Cirque du Soleil. She flipped across the venue on a harness to land on giant metal flower petals during "NIRVANA," interacting with fans around the venue and making every seat in the house the best seat. She flew through the sky on a metal butterfly during "Roar," and twirled up toward the ceiling in a metal globe on an aerial rope during "I Kissed A Girl."

She ended her triumphant set with the powerhouse hit "Firework," perfectly encapsulating the joyous night. Perry created a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle that led the venue through each of her eras, effortlessly weaving fan favorites, deep cuts, and new tracks together on the setlist. Perry's powerhouse vocals, stage presence, and agility made the grandiose production details and costume changes additive not distracting.
