Ethereal songstress Hannah Cohen played her first headline show in Boston at The Sinclair on April 9th. The singer’s catalog of warm and intimate tracks was the perfect way to usher in warmer weather in the city.

The night began with the siren song of mmeadows, who was closing out their opening run of shows with Cohen. Lead singer Kristin Slipp’s vocals reverberated throughout the venue as instrumentalist Cole Kamen-Green alternated between a brass horn and a Nyle Steiner MIDI EVI, a unique electronic horn of sorts. They paused between songs to share how they’ve played at the venue before and that they always love the Boston crowd, winning everyone over and eliciting cheers. Tracks like “Light Moves Around You” and “By Design” showcased their knack for creating beautiful contrast in their soundscapes. Intense bass and synth sounds melded with Slipp’s aching falsetto. The lyrical references to nature made this group the perfect complement to Cohen’s earthy discography.

Soon after, the lights dimmed again, and Cohen stepped out in a stylish denim two-piece set. She dove into the majestic album-opener “Dusty,” with the bubbling melody transporting fans to the Catskills. Along with tracks from her acclaimed latest album, Earthstar Mountain, which she wrote about her love of the mountain range and region, she also debuted new tracks. Soft and melancholic unreleased track “I Loved You” lulled Boston into a trance. She welcomed back the members of mmeadows, sharing that they prepared an extra special show for Boston—a show she deemed a “mediation” and their version of Tiny Desk.

Standout tracks “Draggin'” and "Summer Sweat" featured an addictive twang and stunning three-part harmonies that got crowd dancing. Cohen curated a vibrant show, effortlessly weaving vulnerability and passion through each note of her set. Make sure to catch Cohen live before her tour ends in June. She’ll be back in Massachusetts for Wilco’s Solid Sound festival on June 28th. Buy tickets here and check out more upcoming New England dates below.
